La Gabaret derives its name from Jean Gabaret, lieutenant general of Louis XIV, also called "Grand Gabaret", the owner of the house in the late 17th century

Jean Gabaret (1631-1697) joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16. He was appointed captain at the age of 22, which was young for the time.

In 1672, at the beginning of the Dutch War, he was given command of the Foudroyant. In 1673, he was appointed chief of the Normandy squadron.

In 1689, Jean Gabaret became lieutenant general of the naval armies of Louis XIV.

But in 1693 at Lagos, off the coast of Portugal, he manoeuvred badly and prevented a total victory over the Anglo-Dutch convoy from Smyrna. After that, he never sailed again.

Appointed governor of Martinique in 1693, he undertook to fortify the island, which was still unarmed. He defended Port Royal against more than 5,000 Englishmen with 400 soldiers and 1,500 slaves that he had had armed: the clash, which took place on 31 May 1693, resulted in a defeat for the British!

As a sign of gratitude to the slaves who had participated in the defence of the colony, he reformed the Code Noir and submitted a project for gradual emancipation to King Louis XIV in 1696.

The Minister of War spoke favourably of this project to King Louis XIV, who recalled Gabaret to France. Gabaret set sail in January 1697, but died of cold shortly afterwards, never reaching his destination.
